Book Review-

We are the Sinclairs.

The summertime is when we come alive, on a private island.

You should know that some of us are liars.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart was originally published on the 13 of May 2014 by Allen & Unwin but the deluxe edition of We Were Liars was published by the same company this year.

This book has a huge plot twist that I did not see coming at all. It makes you wonder all the way through the book what could have possibly happened to tear this family apart, or bring them together. The way that E. Lockhart writes is thoughtful and well planned as you could tell that every word was chosen with precise thinking, and that type of writing for me is enjoyable and entertaining.

The genre for this book is YA (young adult) as it does talk about family issues, mental health, wealth and everything that is classified as YA.  In the deluxe edition of this book you get extra content from the author herself. About how she planned and wrote this book and the stages that the book went through. But also, the risk she took to publishing this, it is described that she was scared and nervous to publish We Were Lairs because of the doubts and worries that people wouldn’t like it.

Regarding the characterisation of the four main characters, the appearances and the personality is incredible as the way E. Lockhart describes them you really understand their thought and feelings.  The main character whom we go on a journey with her full name is Cadence Sinclair Eastman.

Her appearance changes through the book from blonde hair to brown nearly black hair, with pale skin. Her thoughts are jumbled and are all over the place because of an accident that left her suffering migraines and memory loss.

Gat – is connected to Cadence, they fall for each other, but he is not the person that the grandfather wants for his eldest grandchild. His appearance is that he has tan/ dark skin but his personality is intriguing to read. As he always has his head in a classic book, he is thoughtful, he is kind, he is smart and most of all he is the one for Cadence.

Johnny – Is the typical boy, loves sports like tennis and marathons. But he is a Sinclair through and through with bright blonde hair and freckles.  His personality is funny, yet oblivious to things, he is kind to others and has manners when they are needed. Overall, he is just a great character that is pleasant to read about.

Mirren – The way that Mirren is described is that she is smart yet a girly girl who loves painting her nails, wearing dresses but is not afraid to get dirty.  Her personality is interesting as she is smart, caring, sarcastic, bossy, yet she will stick up for what is right no matter the cost.

We Were Liars, is an amazing book to read, it took me some time to get into it but when you do you will not be disappointed. Overall, I highly recommend it to any one wants to read a contemporary that has emotions you won’t forget.

Rating – 4.5/5

Book Review- The Illuminae Files

The year is 2575, and two opposing huge corporations- BeiTech and hewshen– are at war over a tiny illegal planet.
Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire catapulting down on the them, exes Lady and Ezra- who are not talking to each other- have to fight their way onto the withdrawing fleet, with a warship wanting to kill them in pursuit.

But the warship is the least of their worries. A deadly and contagious virus has broken out and is transmuting fast, with very bad out comes. The fleets AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say anything about what is going on. As Kady hacks into the system of data to hopefully find some answers to her questions, it’s clear only one person can help her figure out what`s going on: the ex-boyfriend she valid she’d never speak to again.

The Illuminae files is a book that was co-written by the authors Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This book was published by Allen & Unwin in 2015, it does have (currently) one book that comes after this. But there is a third book in the series coming out soon.

The plot in this book is very twisted as it does come across family issues and how different people deal with loss. The plot itself has you thinking that you know what is going to happen in the end but it turns out that the unthinkable happens. Towards the end though there was a lot of tension building up waiting for something big to happen and it did happen but I think it could have been a little better or been elaborated on.

I can`t really compare this book to anything as it is sci-fi and I don’t normally read those types of book, as just really don`t interest me. But this book to me did indeed exceeds my expectations, as everything was well written.

Regarding the character development in this book, it blew me away as you really get to know how Kady feels thinks and acts.  In a way, she is relatable but then in some aspects she is not, what I mean by that is that Kady will do anything to find out the truth and save her loved ones. Even ricking her own life to save thousands. She is described to have pink hair and a hard exterior meaning she doesn’t show a lot of her feelings. The other main character is Ezra Mason her ex-boyfriend you do get to know about him but not his appearance. For example, we know that he played sports in school and that his dad works in the illegal mines and unimportant things like that but not what colour his hair is or what colour his eyes are. But I really didn’t mind as it allows you learn more about his emotions for Kady and the small things that make him who he is.

Going through the book and reading about her adventures it gives a refreshing story that you don’t read often. Yes, it does have romance and action but the way that the text is physically written is intriguing to read, if you haven’t heard its written in files, emails, texts and more text like that.

Overall the Illuminae Files is a terrific book and is very different from others, even though it did take me awhile to truly get into it. It is still really enjoyable to read. Definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to read something really different.
